Proposed Tax Changes Affecting Landlords Delayed For Two Years

Proposed Tax Changes Affecting Landlords Delayed For Two Years

Posted on 20th December 2022

HMRC finally concedes to arguments put forward by landlords and accountancy groups and has delayed a key deadline for compulsory digital tax returns.

A statement from HM Treasury, released late yesterday afternoon, says: We understand that landlords & the self-employed are currently facing a challenging economic environment, and the transition to Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax Self-Assessment (ITSA) represents a significant change to taxpayers and HMRC for how self-employment and property income is reported, the government is giving a longer period to prepare for MTD, therefore, mandatory use of software will be phased in from April 2026, rather than April 2024.

SO, FOR PRIVATE LANDLORDS ...

From April 2026, landlords with incomes over £50,000 will be required to keep digital records and also provide quarterly updates of their income & expenditure to HMRC via MTD-compatible software, those with incomes between £30,000 & £50,000 will need to do this from April 2027.

This info relates to MTD for ITSA only.
